Man Will Catch a Straw——

Man Will Catch a Straw——

** to make a hopeless effort to save oneself(做出無助的自我挽救)

~~ a drowning man will clutch/grab/grasp at a straw (or straws)

!! The proverb projects a literal image of a drowning man clutching at flimsy straws to try to avoid sinking in the water.

!! The proverb was first recorded in 1534 in Sir Thomas More’s Dialogue of Comfort Against Tribulation, “Lyke a man that in peril of drowning catcheth whatsoever cometh next to hand … be it never so simple a sticke.”

>> With no vaccine or effective antidote available for Coronavirus patients, some are trying any medicine that they hear or read about, like a drowning man will catch a straw.

>> The candidate had lost the argument during the election debate, but he kept grasping at straws, citing numerous seemingly relevant issues hoping to turn it around.
