Send to Coventry——

Send to Coventry——

** to deliberately ignore, shun, or ostracize someone -- treating them as invisible

~~ cold-shoulder; turn one's back on; give someone the go-by/brush-off

!! The term referred to the English Civil Wars of the 1640s between forces loyal to the King of England and those loyal to Parliament. Coventry was a staunch Parliamentarian stronghold. When Royalist prisoners were captured nearby and brought to the city for imprisonment, the local residents treated them with open hostility, refusing to speak to them or have anything to do with them. The residents of Coventry also strongly opposed to having Parliamentarian soldiers billeted in their houses. These soldiers were cold-shouldered and not spoken to. The collective shunning is believed to be the root and definition of the idiom.

>> When North Korea continued missile tests, the UN Security Council sent its representatives to Coventry, barring them from informal briefings.
