!! This expression uses knock(a blow)as a metaphor for a setback. It came from the 19th century when advanced education was for the privileged few, but many successful businessmen who were underprivileged rose through the ranks of industry to considerable achievement. They proclaimed quite proudly that theirs had been the "school of hard knocks." The phrase gained popularity in the late 19th-century U.S. during rapid industrialization, being used in rags-to-riches biographies to contrast formal education with the practical, harsh lessons of real-world adversity.
