!! The word “Sock” was used in Britain in about 1700, to mean “strike, hit or punch hard.” It was presumably brought over to the USA by emigrants. The slang appeared in a 1866 book about the American Civil War: “Now then, tell General Emory if they attack him again to go after them, and to follow them up, and to sock it to them, and to give them the devil.” One can imagine the devil filling up a sock with gravel, attaching it to a stubby rod, and using it to hit whomever he didn’t like.

“Sock”這個詞大約於一七○○年在英國使用,意思是“攻擊、打或用拳猛擊”。估計它是由移民帶到美國的。這個俚語出現在一八六六年一本關於美國內戰的書中:“現在,告訴埃默里將軍,如果他們再次攻擊他,就去追捕他們,跟蹤他們,狠狠地揍他們一頓,讓他們見魔鬼去吧。”人們可以想像魔鬼用碎石填滿一隻襪子,把它綁在一根粗短的棍子上,然後用它來打他不喜歡的人。
