Put One's Best Foot Forward——

** to show yourself in the best or most positive initial impression or performance〈展示自己最佳或最積極的初步印象或表現〉

** to put in the absolute best effort in a new endeavor〈在新的嘗試中付出絕對的努力〉

~~ give it your best shot; do one's damnedest; go to great lengths; go out of one's way; bend over backward; make every effort; move beyond; break one's back; bust a gut; boil the ocean; move mountains; move heaven and earth; pull out all the stops!! Around 1500, Henry Medwall wrote in A Goodly Interlude of Nature: "Come behind and follow me. Set out the better legge ..." A variation is found in Shakespeare's King John: "Nay, but make haste; the better foot before."

!! In 1613, Sir Thomas Overby wrote in Characters: A Footman: "His legs are not matches, for he is still setting the best foot forward."
