!! “Run to earth” comes from hunting, where hounds run their quarry, a fox or badger, to the earth where they live, that is, to their lair. The use of “earth” to mean the den or burrow of an animal survives only in this expression.

“Run to earth”來自狩獵,獵犬將獵物、狐狸或獾追到他們居住的地方,即他們的巢穴。這裡使用“earth”來表示動物的巢穴或洞穴,只有在這表達中才存在。

!! Dating from the mid-1800s, the term had been used figuratively to mean tracking down just about anything or anyone.
