~~ last-minute reprieve; rescued at the last moment/second; rescued just in time; off the hook; spared from difficulty; within a whisker; pulled from the brink; spared from disaster; delivered from peril; salvaged by an eleventh-hour intervention

!! The 1930s slang came from boxing that alludes to the bell rung at the end of a boxing round. It “saves” the boxer who has been knocked down and hurt severely if it rings before he has been counted “out.” He can get up, have a minute to recover and continue fighting in the next round. The figurative use of the term to other kinds of fortunate intervention dates from the mid-20th century.

>> He was trapped in the burning living room and couldn't get out, but a firefighter happened to go by his home, and he was saved by the bell.

>> We were to expand our business, but the bank delayed the loan approval, and the market crashed. We were saved by the bell.
