!! This expression alludes to an animal’s behavior when wounded. It could originate from observing an animal's licking its injuries after surviving an attack by a predator. Because of the believe that there are histamines in human saliva that may promote healing, it was originally put as "lick oneself clean" or "lick oneself whole" , literally and figuratively, dating from the mid-1500s.
